A bicyclist fatally struck near the Jefferson Park area was identified by county authorities Saturday.
The rider, identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office as Melvin Salgado, 37, was hit by a speeding dark-colored Jeep Wrangler around 10:50 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 36th Street and Fifth Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police said the driver fled the scene.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Salgado dead at the scene.
“Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” police said in a statement.
A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s conviction.
