The search continued Monday for the hit-and-run driver involved in a collision that killed a man and a year-old child and injured two other people in Playa del Rey.

The driver fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a white Jeep Cherokee at the location, according to Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Division.

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched at 4:34 a.m. Sunday to a collision in the 6800 Vista Del Mar Avenue, just south of Culver Boulevard and a couple of blocks from the ocean. Authorities said a blue 5-series BMW that was northbound on Vista Del Mar Avenue when it was struck by the southbound Jeep, which crossed over into oncoming traffic.

A man who was approximately 30 years old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two critically injured victims — a woman who was about 30 years old and the child — and one other person who was in the BMW were taken to a hospital, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

The child was later pronounced dead, Eisenman said.

The suspect driving the white Jeep was last seen running northbound on Vista Del Mar, she added.

The names of the people who died in the crash were not immediately released. But friends identified the dead man to KTLA5 as Oswaldo Sandoval. According to the station, Sandoval was the dead child’s uncle. Sandoval’s brother — the child’s father — and sister were the other adults injured in the crash, the station reported.

Anyone with information about the collision or the suspect driver was urged to contact the LAPD’s West Traffic Division detectives at 213-473-0234. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can submit information through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or at lacrimestoppers.org.
