The driver of a vehicle that allegedly struck and killed a 40-year-old man in a crosswalk in Van Nuys was in custody Tuesday in a case of suspected hit-and-run.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded at 10:07 p.m. Monday to the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Sherman Way regarding a man lying in the roadway. Witnesses told them a white four-door BMW was traveling south on Sepulveda at a high rate of speed when it collided with the pedestrian, who was inside a crosswalk, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.
Police said the driver fled in an unknown direction without stopping to help the victim, but an officer at the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division said he was later taken into custody.
