A suspect was in custody following a shooting and possible carjacking attempt on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sylmar.
The situation began around 1 p.m. on the freeway near the Bledsoe Street overpass. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to City News Service there was a shooting on the freeway involving police, but it was unclear if anyone was injured.
No other details were immediately released.
Reports from the scene indicated that LAPD narcotics officers were tracking a possibly armed suspect who attempted to carjack a big rig on the freeway. The truck could be seen stopped on the freeway near the overpass. A handgun was also visible on the highway.
No information was immediately available about the suspect or how many shots were fired.
The westbound freeway was closed at the 118 Freeway throughout the afternoon as the investigation continued, causing a major traffic backup heading into the evening rush hour.
It was unclear when the westbound freeway might reopen.
