A 40-year-old motorist suspected of fatally hitting a 19-year-old pedestrian while driving distracted in Long Beach was behind bars Wednesday.

Desean Edwards, of Long Beach, was arrested Tuesday and booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said his bail was set at $75,000.

According to police, 19-year-old Grace Edwards of Long Beach was walking in a parking lot around 3:55 p.m. Nov. 2 in the 2200 block of Bellflower Boulevard when she was struck by a 2015 Lexus IS250, as the vehicle exited a parking stall.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she died on Nov. 5, police said.

Desean Edwards remained at the scene after striking the woman and cooperated with investigators.

He was arrested Tuesday, with police saying “distracted driving is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision.” No other details were immediately provided.

It’s unclear if there was any relation between the victim and suspect.
