A suspect was in custody Friday for allegedly striking a man with a metal pole and snatching his cellphone during a fight on the beach in Santa Monica.
Officers were dispatched to the scene about 9:45 a.m. Friday on a report of an altercation between two men on the beach, the Santa Monica Police Department reported.
“Preliminary information indicates the incident began as a reported theft of a cellphone while the victim was on the sand,” according to a police statement. “A struggle followed, during which the victim was reportedly struck with a metal pole.”
The victim called police, gave officers an “image” of the suspect, whom they located inside a nearby restroom, according to the statement.
The suspect was taken into custody and the victim was treated at the scene for a non-life threatening injury. Anyone with any information regarding the incident was urged to call the Santa Monica Police Department at 310-458-8427.
