A man armed with knives holed up inside a garage after a fire at a South Gate residence Wednesday surrendered to police after a standoff that lasted more than six hours.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to a fire at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at 10163 McNerney Ave. between Tenaya and Michigan avenues where they knocked down the fire.
A resident of the home who had been arguing with family members, who evacuated during the fire, remained inside the residence, and refused to leave, South Gate Police Capt. Roman Amador told City News Service.
The man continued to refuse to leave the premises when fire crews tried to begin their cleanup and instead barricaded himself inside a garage, police said.
A SWAT team was called to the scene and negotiated a surrender with the suspect, who was taken into custody about 6:25 a.m., according a South Gate police lieutenant, who confirmed officers found knives, but no machete, after the man surrendered.
Family members said he was possibly armed with a machete, but police said they only recovered knives.
