A woman found 20 sticks of dynamite inside a freezer at her Valley Glen home Wednesday, prompting an evacuation of the neighborhood, but the materials were safely removed with no injuries reported.
The discovery was made at about 9:10 a.m. Wednesday in the 6100 block of Rhodes Avenue, a few blocks west of the Hollywood (170) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
LAPD Capt. Warner Castillo told reporters at the scene the homeowner called police to report the find, but had no idea how the dynamite sticks wound up inside the freezer in her garage.
Responding officers cordoned off the neighborhood and evacuated residents within roughly 500 feet of the home, he said. Officers went door-to-door asking people to evacuate.
Authorities eventually removed the material, and the neighborhood was reopened at about 3 p.m., police said.
