A 69-year-old transient pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Newport Beach, officials said Thursday.
Police responded to the collision about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 3400 block of Irvine Avenue, near Bristol Street, police said. MaryAnn White-Calhoun was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The driver and passengers in the vehicle were taken to area hospitals to be treated for injuries not considered to be life-threatening, police said.
I worked with MaryAnn. She is NOT a TRANSIENT, but a hard working mother and grandmother, and friend to many. She was walking to the bus stop after work as she does every day. She chose to take the bus every day because she said she doesn’t like the way folks drive in California. MaryAnn was a well spoken, well dressed, helpful, kind woman. Please update the article before her family sees that you described her as transient. Shame on Newport Beach not surprised!!!!

My mother was NOT a transient. She was a 69-year-old working woman — a mother, a grandmother, and a friend to many people in this community, as Michelle’s comment above already confirmed. The likely reason she was mislabeled is that she had an out-of-state driver’s license. That is not evidence of homelessness. That is evidence of lazy, irresponsible reporting.
My mother took the bus every single day by choice — because she did not trust the way people drive in California. She was walking to the bus stop after work, as she did every day, when a driver failed to follow the curve of the road, drove straight instead of turning, jumped the curb, and violently slammed into her, pinning her against a wall. The car then drove through that wall. My mother was pronounced dead at 4:10 PM on Wednesday from multiple blunt force traumas.
She deserved better than what happened to her. She also deserves better than being misidentified in death by the very outlet reporting on it.
Please correct this article immediately. Her name is Maryann. She was somebody. She was MY mother and my every thing. This article may seem small, but it’s insane and disgusting that she would say something so inflammatory about my mother.
