Firefighters worked Saturday evening to save the life of a hiker in a grave medical condition in Hollywood Hills West but the man was beyond saving, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man in his 50s was located in an area north of Nichols Canyon Road about 7:05 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jamie Stewart.

That location could be in Runyon Canyon Park, a popular hiking destination in an area between Mulholland Drive and Hollywood Boulevard.

“LAFD Air Operations lowered a rescuers to the patient and medical treatment was administered,” Stewart said. “Park rangers and LAPD will secure the scene.”

The man’s name and the exact cause of his medical condition or injury was not available but will be confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
