Evacuation orders were issued in a Compton neighborhood Thursday after reports of possible explosives in the area.
Deputies responded at about 1:30 p.m. to the 800 block of North Chester Avenue to investigate a possible discovery of explosives, prompting the area to be evacuated as a safety precaution, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Details about the type of explosives that were discovered or being investigated were not provided. According to a report from the scene, a resident found the material in a storage area.
As of 5 p.m., evacuation orders remained in place, sheriff’s officials said. It was unclear how many homes were evacuated and how many people were affected.
Authorities did not provide an estimate for how long the investigation would continue.
