The Long Beach Police Department plans to conduct a driver’s license/DUI checkpoint in the city’s East Division area Thursday to promote public safety, the department said Tuesday.
The operation is expected to begin Thursday at 6 p.m. and last until 2 a.m. Friday.
The LBPD’s largest geographical patrol division, the East Division is bounded by Del Amo Boulevard to the north, the shoreline to the south, Orange County cities to the east and Cherry Avenue and the city of Signal Hill to the west.
Police said checkpoint locations are determined based on information about incidents involving impaired driving-related collisions.
The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol, and that some prescription medications and over-the-counter medications may interfere with driving.
Marijuana is legal in the state, but driving while under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
Drivers convicted of first-time offenses could face up to $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
