The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department held an educational event Tuesday aimed at helping older adults avoid being scammed through fraud and financial exploitation.

The department partnered with other county agencies and the county’s Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning in presenting the event, titled “Love, Lies and Scams: Protecting Yourself From Romance and Financial Scams,” at the Hacienda Heights Community Center.

The free event, which had translations available in Mandarin and Spanish, aimed to teach people “how to recognize warning signs, avoid common scam tactics, report concerns and connect with local resources and support services,” officials said.

The event was broken down into sections covering each topic.
