Newly deployed Los Angeles Police Department patrol vehicles will be equipped with technology designed to improve emergency response times, reduce traffic collisions and enhance public safety, the department announced Wednesday.
The black-and-white patrol vehicles will feature the Federal Signal Rumbler low-frequency warning system, which works with the department’s existing siren system to emit low-frequency sound waves that can be heard and felt by motorists and pedestrians, according to the LAPD.
“Unlike conventional sirens, these low-frequency tones are capable of penetrating today’s sound-insulated vehicles, allowing drivers to recognize an approaching emergency vehicle sooner and respond more quickly,” the department said in a statement.
The vehicles will also be equipped with the Federal Signal Sync Module, which will allow multiple patrol cars to simultaneously broadcast synchronized pre-recorded public safety announcements, the LAPD said.
Officials said the system will enable incident commanders to deliver consistent messages during evacuations, emergencies and major enforcement operations through patrol vehicle speaker systems.
“This added level of awareness improves reaction times during emergency responses, helping reduce the likelihood of traffic collisions while enhancing the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and responding officers,” according to the department.
The LAPD said the technology was added through a redesign of the patrol vehicle interior by the Motor Transport Division and city vendor partners, allowing the upgrades to be integrated at no additional cost to taxpayers.
