Authorities ID Kaiser Permanente Employee Struck, Killed in Riverside

A 42-year-old Kaiser Permanente employee who was fatally struck by a motorist fleeing police in Riverside was identified Tuesday.

Peter Mullis was fatally injured around midday Monday at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Park Sierra Drive, according to the Riverside Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office.

According to the Riverside Police Department, officers attempted to stop a motorist around 11:40 a.m. Monday for an alleged vehicle code violation. Although the driver initially yielded to approaching officers, the motorist eventually fled on Magnolia Avenue and a pursuit ensued.

The motorist traveling at an unspecified rate of speed struck Mullis near Kaiser Riverside Medical Center, where he was subsequently taken and pronounced dead, police said.

The driver remained at large Tuesday. No description of the suspect or the vehicle were immediately released.

Eastbound Magnolia Avenue between Skofstad Street and Polk Street and all lanes on Park Sierra Drive were temporarily closed for several hours following the collision.

Kaiser Permanente released the following statement Monday night: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our employees in a traffic incident near Riverside Medical Center on July 27. Our heartfelt condolences are with the employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

“Questions regarding the accident should be directed to the Riverside Police Department. Our focus remains on supporting the employee’s loved ones and others affected by this loss.”
