A brush fire that broke out in the Santa Ana River bottom on the west end of Jurupa Valley scorched nearly eight acres before it was fully contained Monday.
The none-injury blaze was reported at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Holmes and Mann avenues, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine and hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning in “heavy” vegetation at a moderate rate, not threatening any residential properties abutting the river bottom.
Firefighters spent hours pushing through the thick brush to establish hose lays and fire breaks, according to officials.
At 2:35 a.m. Monday, the brusher was declared 100% contained. Crews remained at the location, knocking down flare-ups and mopping up containment lines with bulldozers to prevent spillovers.
Operations were expected to be finished sometime Monday afternoon.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. The river bottom is rife with homeless encampments, and cooking, debris and other human-caused fires are common year-round.
