The hit-and-run driver who killed a 15-year-old boy riding an e-bike in Menifee remained at large Saturday, authorities said.
The fatality occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Briggs and Garbani roads, according to the Menifee Police Department.
The agency said the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was riding his eMoto, an off-road electrically powered motorcycle, in the southbound lanes of Briggs when he was struck.
“Witnesses reported seeing a white vehicle traveling south on Briggs … while dragging (the eMoto) underneath its front end,” according to the police department.
After the device became dislodged from the car, the person at the wheel continued southbound without slowing down, investigators said. The teenager was found lying on Briggs just north of Garbani, suffering from a severe head wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later by Riverside County Fire Department paramedics.
Witnesses described the hit-and-run vehicle as an “SUV-type, possibly a minivan, likely with damage to the front bumper area and passenger-side headlight,” according to a MPD statement.
As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made, according to police. Anyone with information about the case was urged to contact the agency’s Traffic Unit at 951-723-1500.
The use of electrically powered motor bikes has increased sharply in recent years. Law enforcement officials regularly remind parents and guardians that minors are not permitted to operate them on municipal public rights of way.
