Two motorists were arrested and 38 citations were issued during an impaired driving enforcement operation in Indio, police said Monday.

The operation was held Friday, and officers contacted drivers of 63 vehicles, according to the Indio Police Department.

In addition to the two arrests, one driver was arrested on suspicion of a speed contest and another driver was arrested on suspicion of a warrant, police said.

It was not immediately clear why officers cited the 38 drivers.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI offense face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
