Felony charges may be filed Wednesday against a 48-year-old man suspected of killing a Cabazon resident and burying the victim’s remains just south of Interstate 10.
Jesse Bruce Kennedy of Cabazon was arrested and booked into the Byrd Detention Center Saturday on suspicion of murder following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation.
Kennedy is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
His case was under review Tuesday by the District Attorney’s Office.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Carlos Mendoza, detectives working an investigation that began earlier this year developed leads Saturday indicating that the body of a homicide victim was located near a residence in the area of Poplar Street and William Avenue, just south of southbound I-10.
Further investigation resulted in the recovery of the remains. The victim’s identity was not disclosed.
The apparent cause of death also wasn’t provided.
Mendoza said Kennedy was immediately identified as the prime suspect and taken into custody without incident in a parking lot not far from where detectives found the remains.
Details regarding how the suspect and victim knew one another and what alleged conflicts existed were not specified.
Court records indicated Kennedy has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County. However, he has a traffic-related conviction from the summer of 2021.
