A 27-year-old pedestrian who sustained fatal injuries following a crash in Torrance has been identified, authorities said Wednesday.

The collision was reported at about 8:40 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Madrona Avenue and Garnet Street, south of Del Amo Boulevard, according to the Torrance Police Department.

Preliminary findings by the department’s Traffic Division and Forensic Investigations Team show that a man later identified as Yuta Sasagawa was crossing Madrona outside of a marked crosswalk and while southbound traffic yielded to allow the pedestrian to cross, he was hit by a vehicle heading northbound.

Sasagawa was pronounced dead at the scene by Torrance Fire Department personnel.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office said he sustained blunt traumatic injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that hit him stopped as required and cooperated with investigators, police said.

“The driver was found not to be under the influence of alcohol,” according to a police statement.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal crash was urge to call the department’s Traffic Division at 310-618-5557.
