Authorities were investigating Monday after a man was fatally struck in Watts by two vehicles, one of which did not stop as required.

The man was struck about 10 p.m. Sunday at 1401 E. Imperial Highway, just south of the Nickerson Gardens community, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and a canopy was set up to conceal his body, the spokesman said.

According to the LAPD, the pedestrian was crossing Imperial Highway from the south curb toward the north side of the street when he was hit by an eastbound, light-colored SUV whose driver failed to stop.

While the man was down, he was hit by a second vehicle that was westbound on Imperial. That driver stopped and cooperated with traffic investigators, according to the LAPD.

The pedestrian was believed to have been homeless, an LAPD officer said.

South Traffic Detectives are urging Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information regarding the identity of the hit-and-run driver or vehicle was urged to contact detectives with the LAPD’s South Traffic Division at 213-479-6416.
