A brush fire that erupted Thursday on a hillside at the south end of Menifee scorched nearly five acres before crews slowed its advance.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the area of Garbani Road and Pitman Lane, a mile east of Interstate 215, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine and hand crews from the county and Murrieta & Fire Rescue were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a slow rate midway up the hill.
No homes or other structures were immediately threatened.
Firefighters deployed hose lays, and shortly before 5 p.m., they were making progress establishing tentative containment lines, according to reports from the scene.
A burn scar from a fire earlier this year was nearby, and crews were trying to use it as a natural fire break.
Evacuation orders did not appear imminent.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
