Authorities Thursday identified an 18-year-old man killed in a shooting in Silver Lake described by police as a “running gun battle” that sent people scrambling into restaurants and bars for safety.
Roderick Garner died on the sidewalk after being shot in the neck and chest around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Maltman Avenue, according to the Los Angeles medical examiner’s office. Garner’s city of residence was not provided.
Two men suspected in the shooting were taken into custody, but their names have not been made available, and a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said it was unclear if the two had been booked.
Witnesses told reporters at the scene that people scattered upon hearing gunshots in the neighborhood, which includes a number of restaurants and bars.
Officers closed down a portion of Sunset Boulevard after the shooting and cleared the scene around 11:05 p.m., police said.
