The Torrance Police Department was conducting a targeted enforcement operation Monday, focused on drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.
The law prohibits drivers from holding a cell phone or any electronic communication device while operating a vehicle, including talking, texting, or using an app.
Violations can result in a fine, and a second conviction for the same offense within 36 months will add a point to the driver’s record.
“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone. That text, phone call, email, or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road,” Sgt. Michael Guell said in a statement.
The department urged drivers who need to take an important phone call or program directions into an app to pull over in a safe parking area. It also advised drivers to silence their phones or place them somewhere out of reach before driving.
