Two people were injured, one critically, during a shooting in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, and a search was continuing for a suspect.

Officers responded around 3 p.m. Tuesday to the 800 block of South Figueroa Street to reports of shots fired, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said the suspect exited a vehicle and produced a firearm and began shooting, striking a victim, who then produced his own firearm and shot back at the suspect in retaliation.

The suspect fled the scene while continuing to shoot at the victim.

According to police, a second victim, identified as a passerby, was struck by gunfire while inside his vehicle.

One person was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The extent of the second person’s injuries was unclear.

Details about what led up to the shooting remained under investigation.
