Benjamin Franklin High School in Highland Park was placed on lockdown Wednesday after a student suffered fatal injuries from an apparent fall.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the school in the 800 block of North Avenue 54, south of York Boulevard, was placed under lockdown while investigators conducted a death investigation.
A student, reported by multiple media outlets to be a boy, is believed to have fallen from a fourth-story balcony and sustained fatal injuries at about 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Citing information from the school’s principal, Marine Davtyan, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman told City News Service that the medical emergency required the school to be placed on lockdown, and added that the safety and well-being of students and staff was the school’s top priority.
The campus was expected to remain under lockdown until law enforcement officials concluded their investigation into the fall.
“All procedures are being implemented according to district policy,” Davtyan said.
