A passenger on a Culver City bus is suspected of fatally shooting the driver in Mar Vista Thursday, according to a broadcast report.

The passenger got off the bus after the shooting, took his bicycle out of a rack in the front of the bus and rode away, CBS LA reported.

Officers responded around 5:15 p.m. Thursday near Centinela Avenue and Washington Boulevard to reports of shots fired, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said responding officers located a man in his 40s at the scene, who sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Due to the bus shooting, Culver CityBus service will be suspended throughout the weekend as the city honors the loss of the bus operator, Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza said.

Puza said the city and transit agency are devastated by the loss of a valued member of the community in what he described as a senseless act of violence.

“We are grieving the lost of someone who dedicated their time and talents to serving Culver City and who made a meaningful difference through the service every day,” Puza said in a statement.

“Behind every city service are people who care deeply about this community, and tonight we mourn one of our own. This loss is deeply personal for our Culver CityBus team and will be felt across our entire city organization.”

Details about what led up to the shooting remain under investigation.
