A pedestrian in her 70s who was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Long Beach last month was identified by county authorities Monday.

Yolanda Hernandez, 76, died at a hospital after suffering traumatic injuries in the crash, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, Hernandez was struck at about 7:20 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street.

She was walking northbound in a marked crosswalk on Baltic when she was struck by a white pickup truck traveling southbound and attempting to turn east onto Burnett, police said. The driver continued eastbound on Burnett without stopping as required.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the woman to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Neither speed nor distracted or impaired driving appeared to be factors in the collision, according to a preliminary investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the collision was urged to call LBPD Collision Investigation Detective Dougherty at 562-570-7358. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).

  1. Anyone that doesn’t stop immediately after hitting a person is definitely impaired in some shape, form, or fashion. Impaired by substance, fear, mental emotion, or something!!! How can the police say if they didn’t make contact with the driver that kept going?
