Amid angry speculation about a UC Irvine student’s death on campus due to soaring temperatures this week, authorities Tuesday said the freshman’s death was due to suicide.

The 18-year-old was found dead in his dorm room on Sunday with the cause of death hanging, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The university issued this statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the death of a member of our student community. Information circulating that the student’s death was heat-related is incorrect, and there are no indications of any suspicious activity related to the student’s passing. Out of respect for the student and the family, the university will not share additional information about the circumstances.

University officials also encouraged upset students to contact the UCI counseling center.

Some students have been complaining on social media about a lack of air conditioning in dorm rooms. The university does have multiple cooling centers for the students open throughout the day.
