A 34-year-old man was charged Thursday with fatally stabbing an 80-year-old man in Anaheim 15 years ago.

Mike Carrillo Nunez, who turns 35 in a week, was charged with murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon.

Nunez was accused of killing Il Jae Kim Dec. 14, 2011.

Officers were called about 9 p.m., Dec. 15, 2011, to an apartment in the 200 block of South Western Avenue, police said in 2011. Police found Kim’s body in the apartment.

Nunez did not enter a plea at his arraignment Thursday. The hearing was rescheduled for Oct. 29 in the North Justice Center in Fullerton.

Nunez pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary in June of 2011 for break-ins in Santa Ana on March 26, 2010 and April 11, 2011, according to court records.

Nunez pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with a sentencing enhancement for great bodily injury for a stabbing in Santa Ana in August 2012.

Nunez attempted to have his stabbing conviction expunged in August 2022 based on an argument he served as a firefighter while behind bars. In court papers objecting to the motion, prosecutors said Nunez was originally charged with six burglaries in his first plea deal and was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the stabbing.

Nunez got the 16-year sentence reduced to nine years under a new law in May 2022.

He met the stabbing victim while standing on a street corner and waved to the victim as he drove past, prosecutors said.

Nunez told the victim “he was a prostitute and offered sex for money, and the two engaged in sexual behavior later that night,” prosecutors said.

A few days later on Dec. 18, 2011, the victim called Nunez to invite him to a party, where the defendant got “very intoxicated” and was asked to leave by security, prosecutors said.

After the two went back to the victim’s home, Nunez stabbed the victim in the stomach, prosecutors said. Nunez told police that he rebuffed the victim’s sexual advances and was using the knife to ward him off, but the victim got wounded when jumping on the defendant, prosecutors said.
