A fire that broke Friday inside an abandoned Jurupa Valley strip mall burned through the roof but was stopped before spreading throughout the structure.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 12:12 p.m. Friday within the vacant building, located on the northeast corner of Packard Avenue and Mission Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency stated that multiple engine and truck crews were sent to the two-alarm fire and encountered smoke billowing out from a hole burned through the roof.
Firefighters quickly deployed for a room-by-room search and found no one inside the structure, according to reports from the scene.
Crews then focused on a confined space where the blaze erupted, containing it less than 15 minutes later.
Firefighters were expected to finish mopping up by 2 p.m.
Sheriff’s deputies shut down one lane on Packard near the building for public safety.
The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known. However, previous blazes in the area have been attributed to homeless activity.
