Firefighters waged a defensive battle Sunday outside a single-story commercial building in the Historic South-Central area of Los Angeles.

The fire was reported at 12:13 a.m. Sunday at 2846 S. Grand Ave., south of 28th Street, according to Jamie Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The flames were out at 1:54 a.m., about an hour and 45 minutes.

The first arriving firefighters reported a rubbish fire outside the 5,000-square-foot building with a panel arch roof had spread inside, Stewart said. They went on the offensive at first.

“Due to heavy pressurized smoke out of first holes on roof and pack-rat conditions in the interior, firefighting operations transitioned to a defensive mode,” he said. That meant drowning the fire from outside the building and protecting surrounding structures.

No injuries were reported and arson investigators were called to determine the cause of the fire, Stewart said.

Downed power lines caused an outage at nearby intersections.
