Officials at the Los Angeles Police Department planned to release additional information Thursday about the arrest of a 28-year-old woman suspected of killing a 16-year-old boy and critically injuring his sister after running a stop sign and fleeing the scene in Hyde Park.
Raygine Glentasia Evans was arrested at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Los Angeles and booked into the county jail where she remained in lieu of $3.255 million bail, police said.
According to the LAPD, Evans has been cited for reckless driving and running stop signs nine times and is wanted in connection with multiple robberies, including 10 in Los Angeles.
The fatal crash occurred at about 9:35 p.m. Sept. 22, police said.
Evans was driving a blue 2025 Nissan Sentra eastbound on 60th Street at 10th Avenue when she ran past a stop sign at 80 mph and struck 16-year-old Hernan Martinez and his sister Vicky Martinez, police allege.
Hernan Martinez died at the scene and Vicky Martinez suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized, police said.
Hernan’s brother, Eliseo Martinez, told reporters his mother was able to pull Vicky away from the car. He said the girl suffered a fractured pelvis and required surgery.
The mother was not hit.
Police said Evans kept driving until the sedan struck a parked vehicle, and then she and a female passenger got out of the Sentra and fled in an unknown direction.
The passenger has been identified as Joannae Shavon Rosby, according to police.
Witnesses said the body of the boy was lodged in the Sentra’s windshield until the sedan struck the parked car.
“The disgusting part of this is what happens afterward,” Detective Ryan Moreno of the LAPD’s South Traffic Division said at a news conference last week. “Hernan ends up placed on top of the vehicle as this suspect continues at a high rate of speed and starts to kind of swerve their car back and forth, attempting to dislodge a body from the top of the car.”
The driver and passenger took some items out of the car before being picked up by someone driving a red Honda Accord, Moreno said.
