Eric Gurna will lead LA’s BEST, an afterschool program that serves about 29,000 students and 195 elementary schools in Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Friday.

Gurna will replace Carla Sanger, who announced earlier this year she is leaving after 26 years as president and CEO of the program.

Sanger was appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley, who started the program in 1988.

Gurna founded the Development Without Limits afterschool program and previously also worked at LA’s BEST and the Harlem Children’s Zone.

The mayor said Sanger made the program a “success” and is leaving it in “good hands.”

Gurna is an “experienced leader who has dedicated his career to serving children,” Garcetti said. “With Eric and his talented staff, I know the future for LA’s BEST will be very bright and more children will have safe places to learn, play and grow after school.”
