The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education selected UC Irvine Extension to provide training for Japanese educators who teach English to junior and senior high school students, it was announced Monday.

Starting in January, UC Irvine Extension will host the 82 Japanese teachers for 11 weeks. The program will include personal English language development, Orange County school visits and an opportunity to live with an English-speaking family.

“The English teacher development program at UC Irvine Extension’s International Programs department is custom-designed to address the specific challenges that Japanese English teachers have in their local teaching environments in Japan,” said Denise Davis, director of International Programs.

“UC Irvine Extension has some 30 years of experience in training instructors from all over the world in the methodologies of teaching English as a second and foreign language and has a long-standing reputation as a provider of outstanding customized programs for groups of teachers sponsored by their ministry or board of education,” she said.

Families that participate in hosting a teacher will be compensated with a monthly stipend for expenses. A search for host families is underway.
