A construction crew ruptured a 2-inch natural gas line on the USC campus Monday, but no one was hurt.
The problem was reported at 7:20 a.m. at McClintock Avenue, between Childs Way and Downey Way, according to the university and the Los Angeles Fire Department. Gate 6 was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and Southern California Gas Co. crews were sent to handle the problem.
According to the utility, a “third party excavation” was being conducted at the site.
“The excavation was planned, and SoCalGas properly marked the lines prior to the work beginning,” the utility said in a statement. “The damage resulted in a leak in the natural gas service line.”
Students were evacuated from the Seeley G. Mudd building as a precaution. Shortly after 9 a.m., the gas was shut off and the evacuation was discontinued, according to USC officials.
Crews were working to repair the line.
