Rumors that an armed person was roaming the campus of a Corona high school Wednesday turned out to be false and may have stemmed from a police visit to the location, authorities said.
Word of an “active shooter” at Santiago High School on Foothill Parkway was circulated via social media sites about 9 a.m., but Corona police said there was no validity to the claims.
“There are a few police vehicles and personnel on the campus today for an unrelated pre-planned meeting with administrators,” according to a police statement. “Rumors of an active shooter are false.”
Nevertheless, police said an investigation was initiated to ensure students’ and campus employees’ safety.
It’s unclear whether the rumors were intentionally spread as part of a hoax, or legitimate concerns regarding students’ and teachers’ welfare.
