A field of more than 7,000 is expected for Sunday’s Nike Go L.A. 10K, the first race to be run on the Marina (90) Freeway since the 1984 Olympic women’s marathon, organizers said.
The field for the race that begins and ends adjacent to the Westfield Culver City shopping center includes 1984 Olympic women’s marathon gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson.
The course begins at the corner of Slauson and Hannum avenues, then continues west on the Marina Freeway for about five kilometers. Runners will then reverse course, heading back to the intersection of Slauson and Hannum avenues.
The race will support organizations that strive to help children be physically active, including Students Run LA; Girls Play LA; Marathon Kids; Culver City Unified School District athletic programs; the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Youth Activities League; Inglewood Baseball Club; and the LA84 Foundation.
The race is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m.
Here are the street closures for the race, in addition to a stretch of the Marina Freeway:
— Slauson Avenue, between Sepulveda Boulevard and Bristol Parkway, will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Sunday;
— Hannum Avenue, between Playa Street and Fox Hills Parkway, will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday through 2 p.m. Sunday; and
— Mindanao Way, between Glencoe Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard, will be closed from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.
