A portable classroom at an elementary school in San Pedro caught fire Tuesday morning, but flames were extinguished within an hour.

Firefighters responded to Park Western Place Elementary School at 1214 Park Western Place at 3:38 a.m. and encountered flames “mainly in the sub-floor” of the classroom, some of which had spread to nearby grass, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A total of 22 firefighters were able to contain the fire and a knockdown was declared at 4:25 a.m., he said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
