City Councilman John Lee is slightly ahead of the 50% threshold required to avoid a runoff in his Council District 12 race against challenger Loraine Lundquist, according to the latest tally of votes from the March 3 primary election.

The latest update on Friday showed Lee with 51.05% of the vote (30,748 votes), to 48.95% for Lundquist (29,489 votes), an educator and astrophysicist.

Lee needs to finish with more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff.

According to Friday’s update, released by the county Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office, 1,922,272 votes have been counted, which is 34.87% of eligible Los Angeles County voters. The estimated number of outstanding ballots left to be counted is 219,500.

The next vote-counting update is scheduled to be released Tuesday.
