Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles, Thursday made public a letter she sent the FAA earlier this week, asking the agency to support the soundproofing of Inglewood High School in its entirety to protect its students from the noise generated by aircraft using LAX.
A statement from Waters’ office in Washington, D.C., said the letter was sent Tuesday to Mark McClardy, the Director of the Office of Airports for the Western-Pacific Region at the Federal Aviation Administration, with copies to Samantha Bricker, Chief Environmental and Sustainability Officer for Los Angeles World Airports, the city agency that manages LAX, and Erika F. Torres, the County Administrator for the Inglewood Unified School District.
“I respectfully request that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) support the determination of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) that the entire campus of Inglewood High School is eligible for school soundproofing,” read the letter.
“As the Member of Congress who represents Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD), and more specifically Inglewood High School, I know that noise from the operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is extremely disruptive for the students at Inglewood High School, and it interferes with their ability to concentrate on their studies.”
Waters asked the FAA to “amend its Final Agency Determination to specifically include all of the school buildings on the campus of Inglewood High School” and restore project funding of more than $22 million.
She recalled that she joined two prominent California Democrats — former Rep. Jane Harman and Sen. Dianne Feinstein — in introducing legislation enacted on Oct. 2, 2008, providing for Passenger Facilities Charges to pay for sound mitigation of the schools in both the Inglewood Unified School District and the Lennox School District.
She added: “I cosponsored this legislation with the understanding that all impacted schools would receive soundproofing … not just portions of the affected campuses.”
