A building at an abandoned prison in Desert Center caught fire Saturday.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 8:04 a.m. on the premises of the former Eagle Mountain Community Correctional Facility in the 1700 block of Desert Avenue, just north of Eagle Mountain High School, according to a map shared by the Riverside County Fire Department.
Fire officials said the blaze had fully engulfed an 8,000-square-feet building but that crews stopped the flames from spreading to other nearby structures.
The fire was contained by 1:40 p.m., with fire crews staying behind for several hours to put out hot spots and investigate the cause.
The prison was closed in 2003 after a deadly riot broke out at the facility.
