Desert Hot Springs High School students Thursday will finish off a DUI prevention program with a mock funeral following Wednesday’s simulated drunk driving collision.
The Every 15 Minutes program, conducted by several community partners and affiliates including the CHP, DHSPD, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, and American Medical Response, will conclude at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with a mock funeral and assembly for students, according to CHP Public Information Officer David Torres.
“Every 15 Minutes is a program which demonstrates to high school students the impact drinking and driving has on friends, families and their community,” Torres wrote in a statement. “The first day of the program is highlighted by a simulated traffic collision that will be conducted at the high school involving an impaired teenager and a fatally injured victim.”
Officers with the California Highway Patrol and Desert Hot Springs Police Department worked with students at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to conduct a simulated drunk driving collision as part of the program, according to Torres.
It was staged at the high school’s football field for approximately one hour with several emergency vehicles, Torres said.
“Let’s stand together in support of our youth, encouraging them to make smart, safe choices,” police wrote in a statement. “Your awareness and support can make a real difference.”
