USC’s financial woes have forced it to begin layoffs at the Keck School of Medicine and Keck Medicine of USC.

The layoff notices were sent to staff via email Tuesday and the school wrote that most of the layoffs should be completed by Friday. according to the Daily Trojan, the school’s campus newspaper.

“‘Despite our best efforts, we were unable to avoid layoffs,” read an email signed by Steven Shapiro, senior vice president for health affairs, Rodney Hanners, CEO of Keck Medicine and Carolyn Meltzer, dean of the Keck school.

“This tough decision is one of the several we are making to stabilize the finances of Keck Medicine and the Keck school, and to ensure economic stability.”

USC has not released the exact number of employee layoffs, but the job cuts are part of financial restructuring plans to address USC’s more than $200 million operating deficit.

  1. I’m so upset to hear about the layoffs of the wonderful Doctors, PAs, nurses & staff at KECK USC! I am a long time patient & really appreciate the care I have received throughout many years at KECK. I’m praying that none of my great doctors, nurses & staff are being laid off. I’m so upset with the deficits caused by this horrible administrations funding cuts to USC & all of the best universities, especially in California! I’m fearful now that the wonderful health care I have been receiving might not be available & my doctors will be out there looking for jobs!
