The first elementary school built to include residents in the North Shore community will open later this month in Mecca.
North Shore Elementary, located at 96-100 70th Ave., will open for the first day of school on Aug. 20. The 60,000-square-foot, pre-kindergarten through sixth grade facility was described by district officials as a milestone.
“This campus will serve as a place of learning, growth and opportunity for up to 500 students — right in their own neighborhood,” Coachella Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Maria Castillo said. “It’s more than a building; it’s a symbol of hope, perseverance and our district’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to a high-quality education close to home.”
“This school represents a promise fulfilled — something the community has dreamed of for years,” Castillo added. “Families have expressed joy, pride and gratitude that their children will now have a school right here in North Shore.”
The site held a groundbreaking ceremony in October 2022.
The mascot of North Shore Elementary is the Monarch Butterfly, which represents “transformation, resilience and growth — values that perfectly reflect our students and our community,” Castillo said.
