Milken Community School announced Tuesday that it has received a $36 million gift from the Koum Family Foundation and will rename its east campus in honor of philanthropist and WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum.
The donation brings the school’s capital campaign total to $152 million, according to school officials.
The 22-acre property, formerly the site of American Jewish University, will be renamed the Jan Koum Campus of Milken Community School.
“Jan Koum’s extraordinary generosity is a profound investment in the future of the Jewish people,” Milken Head of School Sarah Shulkind said in a statement. “We see the creation of this campus as a transformational moment for the Los Angeles Jewish community. By strengthening Milken, we are strengthening the future of Jewish life, deepening community and inspiring enduring connections to Israel.”
School officials said the campus project is intended to expand educational opportunities and strengthen Jewish education in Los Angeles.
The Koum Family Foundation said the naming reflects its commitment to supporting Jewish education and ensuring a strong future for the Jewish community.
Milken Community School serves more than 850 students in grades 6 through 12 and is one of the nation’s largest Jewish day schools.
