Adoption fees were being waived for qualified applicants Saturday at the PD Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center in Long Beach, on the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles’ 20th annual Pet Adoption Day.

The special event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the city’s shelter at 7700 E. Spring St. The fee waivers are provided thanks to event sponsor VCA Animal Hospitals.

The spcaLA said 4,986 animals have been adopted through the annual one-day event, and officials are looking forward to marking the 5,000th adopter on Saturday.

The event also features giveaways, games and vendor booths by Champion Pet Foods, South Park Doggie, Dave’s Pet Foods, Timberwolf, Trupanion, and spcaLA, plus special sales at the spcaLA Marketplace.

KLOS-FM personalities Greg and Jordan will host meet-and-greet sessions at the station’s booth.

“Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome” in the Vendor Village and spcaLA Marketplace. Owned dogs are not permitted inside the shelter except for adoption meet-and-greets. All visiting dogs must be current on rabies and DHPP vaccinations or equivalent. Cats and other pets are not permitted at the event.

The waived adoption fee excludes dogs 3 months and younger, and some additional fees may apply.
