A fire that erupted Thursday in a Riverside apartment killed a dog and displaced its owners but was stopped before it could spread to adjoining units.

The blaze was reported at 8:15 a.m. in the 3200 block of Mulberry Street, near Second Street, just east of the downtown area, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

Four engine crews and a truck company, numbering 17 personnel, were sent to the location and encountered flames in the bedroom of the first-floor apartment.

Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said firefighters contained the blaze to “the room of origin.”

“Firefighters discovered a dog that had perished in the fire,” Vanderhorst said.

The two women occupying the unit were not hurt.

The apartment was declared uninhabitable pending repairs.

Vanderhorst said the occupants declined assistance from the Red Cross and went to stay with relatives and friends.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
