More than 100 firefighters on the ground and in the air battled a three-acre brush fire Saturday evening at Ernest E. Debs Regional Park in the Montecito Heights area of Los Angeles and stopped its forward progress.
The fire was first reported at 7:52 p.m. Saturday at the regional park at 4235 N. Monterey Road, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. That is north of Huntington Drive.
What has been named the Monterey Fire burned in medium-to-heavy brush pushed by 10-15 mph winds, Humphrey said. With 108 firefighters on the scene it gained Major Emergency status.
There was no imminent threat to structures, he said.
“Thanks to 73 minutes of relentless firefighting by LAFD ground and air crews, forward progress of the `Monterey Fire’ has been stopped,” Humphrey said just after 9 p.m. “The LAFD will remain on scene through the night to closely monitor hot spots and complete a damp bare earth perimeter of the burned area.”
The LAFD had three helicopters making water-drops on the flames, he said.
No structures were damaged, no injuries reported and an investigation into the cause was underway, Humphrey said.
