A brush fire that broke out Tuesday on the west end of Jurupa Valley scorched a half-acre in the Santa Ana River bottom before being stopped.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Etiwanda Avenue and 66th Street, just east of Interstate 15, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine and hand crews from the county, as well as the Riverside Fire Department, encountered flames moving at a moderate rate amid heavy brush, the agency said.
Despite breezy conditions, the blaze stalled in a tree line between Arlington Avenue in Riverside to the east and the Goose Creek Golf Club to the west.
Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were summoned to make runs on the fire, but they ended up being canceled after crews made rapid headway encircling the fire, which was fully contained shortly after 5 p.m.
No homes or other structures were threatened.
Officials said the blaze may have started in a homeless encampment. Cooking, warming and debris fires are common throughout the year due to transient activity in the river bottom.
